Automotive

New pressures have led to radical changes in the automotive industry. Automakers have outsourced much of their labor, while tier providers have become responsible for more completely sub-assembled components than ever before. But increased competition and falling profits mean that even greater efficiency and accountability will be required. Technology provides the key.

Success Stories

  • Nissan chooses Proficy HMI/SCADA - Cimplicity
  • With the most productive automotive plant in North America for the last 8 out of 9 years according to The Harbour Report, Nissan North America, Inc., knows how to drive manufacturing. The team has developed the “Nissan Production Way” – which has set the standard for many other manufactur- ers, including those well beyond the automotive industry. And, when it came time to launch the company’s first line of full-size vehicles, Nissan looked to follow its proven and successful model at its award-winning plant in Smyrna, Tennessee – which includes cell-, machine- and plant-wide automation from GE Intelligent Platforms, a unit of GE Infrastructure – at a new plant in Canton, Mississippi.

  • Perodua chooses Proficy HMI/SCADA - Cimplicity
  • To help improve the productivity of their manufacturing operation, the management of Perodua (Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd), Malaysia’s second largest car manufacturer, decided to implement a method for “just-in- time” ordering of part supplies based on vehicle orders. The team envisioned a solution that would integrate distributor and supplier systems with Perodua’s ERP system to access plant floor data in real-time. Distributors would be able to track the progress of their orders vehicle-by-vehicle, and vendors would have the ability to coordinate their part supplies to the facility on a just-in-time basis. GE Intelligent Platforms' Proficy HMI/SCADA - CIMPLICITY, is at the heart of this system.

  • Honda
  • Honda needed a reliable WIP (work-in-progress) tracking solution that didn’t interfere with the manufacturing process but also survives in a high temperature environment. High temperature tags and readers from Escory Memory Systems, allowed Honda to achieve all of their manufacturing goals.

  • Intier sequences with Escory Memory Systems RFID
  • Intier Seating, of Mississauga, Ontario, engaged Escort Memory Systems to help them develop a solution for Ford’s Sequenced Part Delivery requirements. Says Jeff Fuller, assistant general manager of Intier Seating, ‘Today's automotive climate demands our plants to have the capability to run many vehicle types on the same line. The EMS RFID system provides Mississauga Seating Systems (a division of Magna- Intier Seating) with a smart pallets containing the product type and giving the MES the ability to load the respective torques, scans, oven heat %, tact times, and test requirements. Our system drives our operators to produce quality products with complete parts traceability. The EMS RFID system is the core of our flexibility and competitiveness.’
