Power generation plants are seeing fundamental changes to their traditional business models because of a new competitive landscape and an increasingly complex set of operational constraints. New financial market expectations, increased corporate and regulatory compliance, open market energy trading, dramatically higher fuel cost and severe skilled labor and staffing shortages have combined to challenge generating companies to get more from their assets – better and faster than ever before.

Uptime is critical for an electric power plant. To most of us a power outage is an inconvenience, but to some it can mean loss of income, revenue, and in some cases loss of life. By their very nature, power plants are difficult environments. The electrical noise is tremendous, and temperature extremes are not unusual. Power surges are also common, and they can render ordinary commercial Ethernet switches useless.

In the past there was reluctance to utilize Ethernet as a control network because commercial grade switches were too fragile and Ethernet was non-deterministic. Today all this has changed. Switching technology makes the Ethernet deterministic. Fiber optic cable provides a medium that is immune to electrical noise. Ring topologies provide redundancy if a device fails or a cable is cut or damaged.
N-TRON 508FX2 and 9000 series switches were chosen for the application because they met or exceeded all of the criteria of the customer and of the IEEE 1613 specifications. With an operating temperature range of -20C to 70C the desert conditions and heat generated by the equipment would not be a problem.

IES utilizes GE Intelligent Platforms System 90-30* controllers on their proprietary gas collection and scrubber unit and other equipment used to col- lect and process the gas. GE Intelligent Platforms QuickPanel View and Proficy HMI/SCADA – CIMPLICITY monitor kilowatt hours produced, display engine diagnostics, fuel flow and quality, and provide an overview of the gas scrubbing system operation.
While students at Stanford University, Stanford, CA, might not even notice sev- eral minutes without electrical power, patients at the Stanford Medical Center could experience life-threatening complications. Fortunately, the university can rely on round-the-clock, 49-megawatt service from on-site power plant Cardinal Cogen. This independently owned plant provides all of Stanford’s steam and electricity with the help of a GE Integrated Control Systems (ICS) solution that features CIMPLICITY® monitoring and control software from GE Intelligent Platforms.
As power is a mission-critical element, a DG system has to be ready at a moments notice, without fail. GE Intelligent Platforms reliability was a key factor for PowerSecure, knowing that when a system has to operate in emergency mode, it leaves no room for equipment failure. The GE Intelligent Platforms based DG system enables utilities to reduce costs and eliminate downtime, as power is instantly available from the emergency onsite generation if an issue arises with the utility.
